UPDATED – About That N&O Gambling Money Story…

North Carolina has been treated to yet another edition of ‘Name no Democrats’ up at the N&O by AP Writer Michael Biesecker. Only mentioning the top GOP players in a story is becoming a regular event, especially if they are running for the Senate. It really fits the ‘slam, eviscerate and cripple‘ pattern we’ve come to know all too well. In fact, it would appear that Biesecker’s story is pretty damn close to the big bullet points of this Democracy NC memo, which is a group tied to BluePrint NC.

I suppose anything that draws attention away from the pummeling Hagan is taking over her 24 Obamacare lies is a good thing in the mind of Democrats — even a story that broke around 6 months ago or so and is now being recycled and includes some of their own ‘best and brightest’.

I’ve included the whole list of names further down, because, you know, Biesecker didn’t include that in his report. Maybe because he didn’t want you to see the ratio. 42 were Republicans and 28 were Democrats, yet Biesecker only wrote about the Republicans. I also like how Biesecker mentioned McCrory gave money to a charity tied to Burns, but didn’t report that McCrory donated a chunk to the Rescue Mission. Luckily, Biesecker’s own paper did report that earlier this year:

The state GOP House and Senate caucuses accepted $55,000 combined from Burns, who also gave the $4,000 maximum to Gov. Pat McCrory. A party spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment Thursday morning. A McCrory spokeswoman said his campaign gave $4,000 to a Durham Rescue Mission – N&O

A story which is no longer available* at N&O for some reason notes that McCrory donated $18k:

Spokeswoman Kim Genardo said McCrory’s campaign has given $18,000 to charity to offset donations from Burns, his wife and other sweepstakes donors facing criminal charges. The governor’s campaign received more than $82,000 from sweepstakes donors, according to an analysis of disclosure reports by the AP and Democracy North Carolina. – Chatham Cty Bulletin Board

The Governor also stated he never met Burns. Biesecker left that out.

More about McCrory’s donation to charity and here, along with a claim by the Democrats they were going to donate what they received. I have yet to see a follow-up on that claim. I’m sure Democracy NC will get right on that one. I poked around myself and can’t find anything on the NC Dem’s site touting they’ve done so.

Democrats Of Note Left Out Of N&O Story

Dan Blue who received $2,500. Blue’s brother, Dhamian, brother sits on the board of BluePrint NC’s creator, NC Justice Center. He and his brother are both lawyers at their father’s firm.

Why wasn’t Blue mentioned? This is why:

Dan Blue III-Chair
“I am Dan Blue III and will be serving as the Chair of the Wake County Democratic Party for 2013 – 2015. I’m excited about our opportunities here in Wake County to build a better party and win elections.”

Also the list of Democrats is Senate Minority Leader Martin Nesbitt ($4K) and Senate Minority Whip, Josh Stein ($4K), who I believe has decided to run for Attorney General? Stein also has an interesting family member — Gerda Stein, his sister, who contributed $12,000 in 2007 and 2008 to him. Gerda Stein also held a fundraiser for him in 2010 at her home. Gerda Stein works for the Center for Death Penalty Litigation, but she also sits on the board of BluePrint NC.

Here’s the list, by Party, name and amount received.

Great job as usual but I noticed that Rep. Alma Adams (D) wasn’t included in your list of campaign contribution recipients. It’s been reported that she received $1,000. http://www.thetimesnews.com/news/region-state/more-lawmakers-got-money-from-sweepstakes-executive-1.114278

I like the article. However, the House Minority Leader is Larry Hall. The Senate Minority Leader is Martin Nesbitt. You are correct that Biesecker didn’t mention all the donations. He also didn’t mention that if the party leadership were reversed, then the Dems would have received the larger amounts. The amounts seem typical for the party in power, the leadership positions, and the members’ seniority. Also, many of the anti-lottery folk on the list got the lowest amounts.
