Michael Justin Childers, age 32, was charged with one felony count of peeping. He was issued a $10,000 secured bond which, according to jail records, he posted bond within hours of his arrest and was released. Childers’ next court appearance is today, Monday, Dec. 7.

According to police, the camera was discovered last Monday under the sink. It appeared to have become detached from under the sink and was found on the floor. The district says that both schools were “thoroughly searched.” No other recording devices or cameras were found.

According to information on Childers’ Facebook page, he claims to be a custodian at Ellendale Elementary School, also located in Alexander County.

Alexander County Schools released a statement on Childers arrest:

Alexander County Schools is aware of the recent arrest of a custodian at Wittenburg Elementary School.

This is a personnel issue and is currently under investigation by local law enforcement; therefore, we cannot comment.

We would like to clarify that information previously shared on some personal social media accounts is not correct. We do not believe that students are or have been in any danger throughout this situation.

It is unclear what led authorities to Childers. The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office says the investigation is still ongoing.
