Otis Taylor Saulsberry, age 47, was charged with one count of indecent liberties with a student who was under the age of 18 and one count of indecent liberties with a child.

Police officials in Sampson County said that Saulsberry had been carrying on an “inappropriate relationship” with the student.

Saulsberry paid a $10,000 unsecured bond, was released and will return for a court date on July 27.

This is the second teacher in as many months from Lakewood High School to be arrested. In May, another Lakewood High teacher, 26-year-old Jacob Scott, was arrested on charges of taking indecent liberties with a student.

Saulsberry was an ROTC instructor at Lakewood High School in Sampson County.

School officials indicated that Saulsberry had resigned in the middle of the investigation into his actions.

North Carolina law requires teachers and educators to give a 30-day notice before resigning. Should a resignation be connected to ongoing police investigations or pending charges, the local superintendent has the option to suspend without pay or terminate employment.

According to his Lakewood High bio, Saulsberry had a career in both the Army and Marine Corp. and was deployed overseas several times. The bio also mentions Saulsberry is married with three sons.
