Carla Black, Principal of Concord High School, recently received the Educator of the Decade Award from the Cabarrus County Branch NAACP and on her Facebook page, encouraged people who were Democrats to go out and change their affiliation to unaffiliated in order to vote in the upcoming Republican Primary on May 6th. So, what’s worse? A Principal endorsing a tactic meant to tip a primary one way or another or the fact the same Principal is endorsing this activity at a voter registration drive at schools?
By the way, this isn’t Ms. Black’s first encounter with controversy. In 2013, a letter was circulated by the “Concerned Community Committee” alleging various acts of misconduct involving fundraising, hiring of employees and other items at Concord High School. An investigation cleared up several of the accusations.
This tactic of affiliation swapping is also being employed by Leigh Brown, the challenger to Rep. Pittman in NC-82, as well as others in the Cabarrus county area.
By the way, it would appear that Black has since deleted this post as it is now nowhere to be found on her page. It is also possible her Facebook settings are not allowing me to view it. She also removed or has limited viewing to a post including a flyer for the event. I have images of both posts below thanks to a reader.

There is nothing illegal about what she is doing! As a registered Republican, I was encouraged years ago to do the same thing to vote in a Democratic primary. I’m still a registered Republican much more toward the middle than the idiots in my party that are soo far right and unbending that they are destroying the party itself. I have learned to detest them as much as the idiots on the far left! The polarization of American politics will assure us that nothing will get done, anywhere! Here in Cabarrus County, like in Raleigh, these same people are lined up against those that need help. They only want to help the people that are of like mind, color, sexual orientation, and religion. What ever happened to separation of Church and State anyway? So, I too encourage all Democrats, mostly you guys just on the other side of the moderate fence, to change affiliation to independent. That way you can help decide who are the best candidates for the Cabarrus County Commission. Ok I’m off my soapbox!

The point here being they are not switching because they think the message is more to their views. Rather, they are doing it to get someone on board wearing an R next to their name who really isn’t an R.

“In North Carolina, unaffiliated voters are permitted to vote in the Democratic primary. However, if an unaffiliated voter chooses to vote in the Democratic primary, he or she cannot vote in a Republican runoff (or second primary). Similarly, an unaffiliated voter who votes in a Republican primary cannot vote in a Democratic runoff.”

I’m not sure there is anything illegal about this practice, but the BOE should be made aware of this ruse. Has this been forwarded to the NC BOE? Maybe there needs to be a wait period from the time of a voter affiliation change and elections.

You know what my friend, I think I will call next week — just for my own knowledge. My reaction when I read your article was immediately negative – leading me to think there is something rotten in NC if this happens. Just seems wrong!
