The Way the Media Manipulates the Way We Think About Guns

By Darren Davis

America is at war right now. There are people that are fighting tooth and nail to deny our right to the 2nd Amendment. There is no way we can deny that there has been an abundance of violence lately. We have the shooting in Aurora, the Sandy Hook Shooting, the shooting of Trayvon Martin, the list goes on and on. As tragic as these events are, the media seems to be looking at things the wrong way. By doing this, we have legislators that are actually suggesting that we place limits on our right to bears arms. This reaction is heavy-handed and isn’t going to solve the actual problem.

The liberal media will have you believe that all of these attacks could have been prevented if the perpetrators didn’t have access to guns. To be completely fair, this is mostly a true statement. With that being said, the media isn’t presenting the issue in a fair and balanced way. By the way, this is supposed to be their job. The media parades these people in front of the eyes of the average American citizen, and uses them to show everyone how “evil” and “bad” guns are. Wait a minute. What about the average American gun owner? What about the responsible gun owner that just wants to be able to have the means to protect his or herself and his or her family? These are the people that the media doesn’t parade around for everyone to see.

It’s simply a matter of dishonesty and lying by omission. Let’s take a look at the facts:

  • Guns are used 2.5 million times a year in self-defense. Compare that to small amount of shootings that there are every year.
  • Guns are a key element is preventing sexual assault against women.
  • States with concealed gun laws have lower rates of murder and rape.
  • Police shootings result in more innocent deaths than civilian shootings.

These are all facts about how guns are actually used in everyday situations. No one is saying that we should feel bad for the perpetrators of those shootings that were mentioned earlier. Their use of guns was misuse of guns and they deserved to have the full force of the law come down upon them. The liberal media loves to paint gun owners as people that sympathize with these mass killers. That isn’t the case at all.

Despite all of this evidence, the liberal media will still say: “They wouldn’t have been able to kill that many people if they didn’t have guns.” This isn’t necessarily true. Not that long ago, there was a case in China in which 29 people were killed by assailants who were armed with nothing but knives. 29 were killed; 130 were injured. That’s astonishing. China has strict gun control; what’s the deal? According to liberals, there should be no violence there. Unfortunately, there is. What if one of those Chinese citizens had a gun? They would have been able to protect their fellow citizens from these attackers. This story proves that the liberal false dichotomy is wrong. Getting rid of guns does not equate to a Utopian society and not everyone that uses guns is a psycho.

Guns are meant to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your fellow citizens. Don’t blame the guns for the crime. Blame the criminal. Most people use their cars responsibly; other people use their cars to run people over. Should we ban cars now? No one with half of a brain cell would recommend that. No one with half a brain cell should be recommending we limit our right to the 2nd Amendment.
