Carteret high school teacher accused of off-campus peeping

A Carteret County Public Schools teacher has been charged with peeping charges related to an off-campus situation.

Mark Thompson, age 50, was arrested on June 1 and charged with felony peeping. A booking photo was unavailable.

The charges involve the attempted installation of a Wi-Fi device that would have captured video or images in the bathroom at his stepson’s trailer. Thompson had apparently been caught installing the device by his stepson’s wife, who called the police.

Thompson was issued a bond of an undisclosed amount, which he posted and was released on the same day of his arrest.

Carteret County Public Schools indicated Thompson is currently suspended with pay pending an investigation.

Thompson has been a tennis coach and career and technical education (also called CTE) teacher at West Carteret High School since 2006.

“Mr. Thompson was suspended with pay on June 1, 2023, pending an investigation. Due to privacy laws, we are unable to share further details of the investigation,” reads the statement issued by Carteret County Public Schools. “We have been advised by law enforcement officers that the allegations against Mr. Thompson are not related to any school or his work as an educator and do not involve a student.”

The district’s statement said they would be monitoring the criminal court case and personnel and privacy laws prohibited them from discussing any other details.

The case is still active and falls under the jurisdiction of the Morehead City police.

Records show an active teaching license on file with the state for Thompson in the area of Business Information Technology Education. The license was issued on July 1, 2019, and has an expiration date of June 30, 2024.
