Common Core And South Carolina’s Withdrawl – PT 2

Earlier today I wrote about the South Carolina Superintendent’s plan to truly kill Common Sad woman CCS articleCore. I pointed to the copyright and terms of use as the tools Superintendent Zais needed to complete his task.

There were other interesting things about this article at The State, but they were in the comments. One comment from that article that I’d like to highlight hits on the new narrative of Common Core Supporters:

It’s really not accurate to say that the reaction to CC is purely political – because that wouldn’t be fair to politics. The folks waving signs and screaming haven’t a clue what’s in it, or how to improve it, or even a viable alternative to it. Nope – that would mean doing something productive. And in all likelihood, they have absolutely no stake in public education anyway.

The resistance to CC is simply more of the same rabid, shallow, knee jerk partisan hatred of President Obama. And it’s being pushed by the profit – driven conservative entertainment media for its ratings value. And that’s all it is. Obstruction purely for the sake of obstruction, with no worthwhile goals for the state.

I can assure you, my objection and that of others in this fight has zero to do with who is or is not in the White House. The idea of nationalizing education in the manner that is being tried is something everyone should be questioning.
I object to my son being asked to do tasks well beyond his cognitive and developmental capacity. I object to standards which our state had no input in creating nor any way to change since they are copyrighted. I object to the idea CC is ‘high reaching’ when the stated goal is to herd the middle 40% or so of students into a 2 year non-selective college. I object to the increased data collection on our kids that has little to do with academics and is turning out teachers into data entry consultants. Those are just a few and they are valid complaints.

I also object to the “knee-jerk” reaction of demonizing those people with valid concerns about Common Core in such a manner as the one you just displayed in an effort to make us shut up.

By the way, the ones making the profits off common core are not ‘conservative driven media’, it’s the testing consortia, textbook companies, software groups and tech companies — Do some homework. Start with Bill Gates, then read about Pearson. There are untold billions to be made off the backs of our kids — these companies know it and are also the ones pushing Common Core in any way they can.
