Fay Observer Op-Ed Politicizes Common Core

Again, those complaining the most about ‘politicizing’ the Common Core are the biggest offenders of said complaining.

Case in point — Fay Observer has a hacktastic Op-Ed up which hits the politicizing path and contains all the vitriol, rhetoric and shutuppery that Common Core opposition have come to know from Supporters. Quick snippet for your amusement:

Unfortunately, some of those with an extreme education agenda have won seats in our General Assembly and are pushing to erode the Common Core curriculum standards that educators worked so hard to put in place.

This group has concerns about school policy being dictated centrally by the federal government. Anti-Common Core activist Glenn Fink of New Bern said, “I care about protecting North Carolina’s sovereignty and the people are not led down a path that the federal government wants to take us.”

Like most fringe movements, this one has its facts wrong. Common Core was developed, not by the feds, but by the National Governors Association and state education superintendents. More than 40 states have adopted it.

I will point the Fay Observer hacks to please do their close reading and stop making inferences from statements they wish were there, but really aren’t.  Opposition is not a fringe movement nor does Mr. Fink have his facts wrong and the writer of this op-ed has attributed their own opinion to his statement.

Common Core was developed by the CCSSO and NGA, along with Achieve, Inc. and millions upon millions of dollars from the Gates Foundation. HOWEVER, it was SOLD to the states via dangling large sums of money in the form of a Race To The Top Grant (RTTT). Where did the RTTT money come from? The President’s Stimulus (ARRA). Facts matter, Fay Observer, and you are really light on them. While you’re doing your homework for next time, try reading the Common Core Sales Job.

Well, as is my M.O. with these Common Core media propaganda pieces lately, I left a comment:

Another unsigned Op-Ed from another NC outlet. Why am I not shocked by the lack of fact and reliance on demonizing the opposition to the Common Core?

Because they can’t defend the standards, so the tactic becomes: SHUT UP YOU FRINGE PEOPLE!

They are a fundamentally flawed set of experimental garbage produced by DC trade organizations unaccountable to anyone but themselves and funded by big business more concerned with making nice little compliant worker bees than an actual education of a child.

The last line is a positively hilarious false equivalency with no awareness of the facts:

“The standard, Common Core, is what states have agreed upon. Anything else isn’t a standard, but a concoction, placing education policy firmly in the hands of the fringe.”

Dear Fay Observer Hack,

The states were coerced with millions of Race To The Top Dollars which came from the ARRA (stimulus). The idea that only a coalition of DC trade organizations that ‘concocted’ Common Core can write a standard that would be acceptable is beyond parody.

What’s more, the Fay Observer seems to be calling the commission to be set up a ‘fringe group’. That commission is to be made up of parents, educators, legislators and business people — all NC Citizens. I do believe the Fay Observer just insulted every single reader.
