Like most parents with children in school, I worry about what they are learning and doing all day. I also worry about their safety. Violence and crime in schools is on the rise and I’ve written about the troubling fight incidents going on in my own school district.

Like other parents, I also worry about the idea of a shooter coming into my kid’s school. Schools are the ultimate soft target. They are largely unguarded, especially elementary schools and middle schools.

Lt. Gov Forest And Burt’s Law [VIDEO] – #ncga

Take a moment out of your day to watch Lt. Governor Dan Forest talk about Burt’s Law, which was signed by Governor McCrory this year.

Senate Bill 445, Burt’s law, protects citizens suffering from mental illness from sexual abuse in group homes where they are being cared for. This is an important piece of legislation and it’s good to see the Lt. Governor highlighting it.

There are also a couple of shootings (which I will discuss in part two), that personally touched my family, specifically my husband. Many people in our nation have asked for an open dialogue about gun violence. I felt it was time that I would start one. Maybe, what we need to do is wait and breathe before automatically deciding it is the weapon to blame instead of the individual who commits that act. After all, there is no such thing as a deranged weapon.

Back in January of 2011, I felt compelled to write a note and place it on my Facebook page, Liberty Speaks, for all to see. I was disturbed at the quick condemnation of the First Amendment and the accusations that speech was to blame for the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords and the deaths of six others. Below is that note, with a few updates which will be highlighted. Continue reading
