Hmm. What’s this guy’s immigration status? Is he one of Obama’s dreamers? On first inspection, he’s listed as a white male. You have to dig a little deeper to find that he’s a Hispanic male.

I noticed the arrest report had him down as “White.” He’s clearly not.

Yes he is “white” in the eyes of the law. What you don’t realize is that “Hispanic” is an “ethnicity” not a “race”. The NC Dept of Public Safety only recognizes 6 “races”- Black, White, Indian, Asian/Oriental, Other and Unknown.
There-in lies a HUGE problem breaking out the percentages of “Hispanics” who are being charged with crimes in NC and in the US quite frankly. I have seen Hispanics listed as every one of those 6 races on the NCDPS Offender Public Information website (https://webapps.doc.state.nc.us/opi/offendersearch.do?method=view)
It makes it VERY convenient to manipulate the “race” of an individual so that one “race” is not over-represented in our criminal justice system. Why else would you have different “Gonzalez” (for example) listed as “White, “Black”, “Indian”, “Unknown” AND “Other”
Go to the link above and type in ANY Hispanic surname and scroll through the listing of “Race” for each individual and see for yourself….
