NC English Teacher: Only White Male Christians Are Safe From Trump [Audio]

English lessons in one North Carolina high school included questionable characterizations of Presidential Candidate Donald Trump, as well as commentary about Republicans and FOX news.

Audio of the lesson in question was captured by a student or students unknown attending Cedar Ridge High School in the Orange county school district.

The English lesson given by Amanda Harder centered on various modes of persuasion called Ethos, Pathos and Logos. These modes of persuasion are also known as the ‘three artistic’ proofs of persuasion as termed by the Greek philosopher, Aristotle.

Ethos speaks to the character of the speaker, Pathos represents the emotional impact of the speaker on an audience and Logos represents the logic or content of an argument.

It is unknown why political parties and current political figures were used for the lesson instead of classical literary references or even Aristotle’s own works.

Harder’s personal website has a section on her ‘educational philosophy’. The section, in part, states that teaching is an “active process” and is “communal”.  Harder’s philosophy also says that, “a classroom should be a safe environment for all.”.

The audio was obtained by this site after the students had allegedly endured multiple lessons of the same nature. Allegedly, the class had previously been comparing speeches made by Adolf Hitler to that of Presidential candidate Donald Trump.

Some of the comments made by the teacher, Amanda Harder, were sent along with the full transcript to both the Principal of Cedar Ridge High and to the Orange county school board.

Excerpt:

“So, Trump may not be master of many things. He is in fact the master of Pathos. O.K. … he… he is poking the fryers under particular niches of people in this country. People who are anti-Mexican, people who are anti-Muslim, people who are anti-woman.

Basically the only people who seem to be safe from this guy are white Christian males… am I missing anything? Oh, American — white Christian male Americans.”

This site reached out to the Principal of the school for comment, however none was forthcoming. The Communications Director for Orange county schools, Seth Stephens, issued the following statement:

“We certainly have a policy that acknowledges that political literature or items of a political nature can be used for instructional purposes, but in no way should a teacher use any sort of political materials that are ‘pro’ or demean an political party or political position — there’s no place for that in the classroom. There just isn’t.”

The Orange county school board did not respond for comment.

Since reaching out to the school for comment, sources tell this site that Ms. Harder has now begun collecting student cell phones at the beginning of class.

It’s worth noting Harder’s personal website mentions technology use. The section includes a statement on cell phones with an ironic misspelling.

“I do not want to confescate phones, but I will if they become a distraction to instruction.”

In this case, the cell phone has arguably gone from a distraction to an instrument of instruction.

Orange county schools are no stranger to controversial lessons. In 2015, a third grade teacher named Omar Currie read a book with a homosexual theme to his class. The book, King and King, features two Kings who fall in love and kiss at the end.

Currie did not seek parental permission and claimed it was an ‘anti-bullying’ lesson. That claim was swiftly debunked by outraged parents.

It was also discovered that Currie, and the Assistant Principal of the school he was employed, at attended an LGBT conference just months prior to Currie reading the book to the class. The pair led a session designed to infuse social justice and ‘Disrupt Heteronormative School Cultures’  in elementary classrooms via books like King and King.

Curry allegedly resigned his position in North Carolina prior to the reading of the book and is now working as a teacher in Virginia.

The full audio of Amanda Harder’s lesson is available below along with a transcript.
Note that the mention of specific student names by the teacher had been electronically masked to protect their identities.

TRANSCRIPT:

H = Amanda Harder (Teacher)
S = Students

H: …if you don’t buy this life insurance you’re letting your family down. So, that’s like playing on people’s secret fears.

H: Who is the master of Pathos? Sadly, it’s those two on a daily basis. Who… who in the news…

[Cross talk]

S: Trump!

H: Trump. Right.

[Cross talk]

S: Wait whaaaat?

H: So, Trump may not be master of many things.

Oh, American — white Christian male Americans.

Alright? So, who knows what his actual motives are but he is a master at manipulating his audience, right? He knows where the fears lie and he is going right after them.

Now, is he any different than any other politicians? No. Not really. I mean, Hillary Clinton is guilty of the same thing. The only difference is she is a little bit more subtle about it. He just doesn’t seem to care who he offends. She seems to be more subtle about offending the general public. O.K.?

Uh…So.. can you give me an example of – one example of Pathos used by Trump? Or if you can think of one from another politician that’s fine, it’s just that Trump’s are easy to pick out.

[Pause]

H: What about…. [STUDENT NAME REDACTED].. did you come up with one? For Trump?

S: Yeah, um when he could criticize the mother and father of the fallen soldier and he said that she couldn’t comment because she was Muslim… and that was kind of.. it was like instantly me against Muslims and she was like I was trying not to break out in tears because her son died.

H: Right. So he was hoping one group of people would be behind him – the anti-Muslim group of people. But he totally disregarded the fact that these were AMERICANS.. first of all. [Laughs] And these were people who lost their son and their son had been lost fighting for this country. .So that kind of backfired on him a little bit.

Alright? Ummm.. Any other examples? I want you to try to pick up… pick out a non-Trump example, because, like I said, he’s sort of a ‘gimme’. He’s so easy. What about the others?

[Silence]

H: It’s so easy with the Republican party in general. I want you to start looking for these with the Democrats when you see them on TV. Because again, there’s much more subtlety in the Democratic party. It’s harder to pick out. [STUDENT NAME REDACTED]?

S: You see it a lot with the reactions like gun control, after they, like, when the people making speeches about that. You see that a lot.

H: Alright.. so there’s the [unintelligible]. O.K. Here’s a good.. well, it isn’t Obama saying it, but it’s a good reaction to something Obama said. There was a threat of Obama, like some kind of gun control law and then everyone ran out and bought all these guns. They like were just like.. get.. buying everything in the gun shops because they thought Obama was going to steal their guns. Like.. ‘we couldn’t have guns anymore’.

So, that kind of backfired on Obama a little bit because it inspired a whole group of people to run out and buy the guns. Right?

Um.. So, remember, it has to be orchestrated. It has to be designed when you’re dealing with rhetoric. These are things that are specifically designed for a specific purpose but often times they backfire.

S: That’s not what I meant. I meant like when they are actually talking about, when you know these people are shooting these people and stuff like that. That is a.. that can be a Pathos.

H: Pathos. Absolutely. Let me ask you this – because here’s a fine line: So when he did all those speeches about um… Newtown. The shooting in the kindergarten class? Is that Pathos or is that Truth?

[Silence]

S: Pathos [unintelligible] if you accept the [unintelligible].

H: Well I think… Here’ the.. Here’s the fine detail you have to be aware of – it’s Truth when you’re not trying to get anything. It’s Pathos when you’re trying to manipulate.

Now he may have in the back of his mind been trying to manipulate people into supporting the gun control law. But at that moment he was probably just memorializing the kids and the teachers, right?

So, be aware of that and there are some news channels that you’re probably watching at home or that your parents are watching at home that are masters at this kind of stuff. I mean, the thing that comes to my mind is FOX news.

[Student cross talk]

H: But.. there are… FOX news is on the Right… side of the spectrum. But there are ones equally as guilty on the Left side of the spectrum.

My father who is a cah-razy conservative, thinks NPR is guilty of that. I don’t think so. I think, like…

I think like CNN and NPR and Al Qaeda… [sigh]Uh, Al Qaeda….[class laughs] ..Al Jazeera are all sort of middle of the roaders.

But um, there are those sort of Lefist news shows as well. So bear that in mind.

And then there is the third rhetorical device we will be studying today – is Logos. That is the appeal to logic. Every argument has to have Logos. If you don’t have Logos, if you don’t have a logical argument that makes sense? You’re dead in the water. You don’t even need the other two. O.K.?

So, we are going to watch a couple of videos. My expectation is that you will lift up that paper and take notes on important things you see in these videos. O.K.?

And then we’re going to do a little activity that helps you reinforce what you’ve learned.

[cross talk and noise – Recording Ends]

It looks like she was attempting to teach them to use their brains. She did not target Trump or Fox, but said there were people end of the spectrum. She was encouraging them to think for themselves. She should be applauded.

Unlike people who blindly follow a man who talks about crooked Hillary when he is the only candidate who has been found GUILTY in courts, not once, not twice, but numerous times. Lawyers worked to ensure he came away only paying fines.

The whole world views Trump as a clown, or worse. Googe worldview of Trump. His supporters are loyal, even when he insults them. For Trump to say he could commit murder and not lose votes is saying they are unethical people.

What would happen if he has the opportunity to hand our country over to Putin, since he admires him so much.

This kills me the more I read on, seeing more articles and comments about how she needs to be fired or action needs to be taken against her, it sucks. She was one of the only teachers who I actually liked, period. I didn’t show it too well, I didn’t usually engage in conversation with her that often, but she stayed checking up on me to make sure everything is fine. I hate that this is happening to her. She is an amazing person, and a wonderful teacher. It’s getting to the point where i’m becoming angry whenever I see or hear something pertaining to this. She doesn’t deserve this, she’s is one of, if not THE greatest teacher I ever had, or will have. It really saddens me to know that more than likely i’ll never see her again. The (teens is a word too mature for the people at cedar ridge.) children at this school are really pushing it this year. They only want to cause negative things 24/7, and look where it’s gotten one of the best teachers at that school. I owe this feeling of anger to took that video, whichever childish person couldn’t take a simple lesson in school and decided to turn it against the teacher all because she wasn’t glorifying Trump. She was not comparing him to Hitler. She was only teaching a class of students, and one belligerent child who took this lesson to heart in the wrong way. Whoever took this video and sent it out, I really hope you’ve gotten what you wanted. You have done something awful. Also, to the parents who believed in their children and spoke out, you really should have checked on the lies your children were telling you. She resigned, just so you know, and now we have lost a great teacher at that school. To anyone worried about this tarnishing the schools image, it’s not her fault, the person who took the video is who’s fault this is. They took a video out of context, and (no surprise here) it was taken to the media to be twisted and remade in a way that made her seem like an awful person. I feel like if you weren’t there, you do not have a right to believe in either side. That’s only my opinion though, it doesn’t matter outside of this comment. You won’t see this, but i’ll miss you Mrs. Harder, you were the best teacher I ever had. I’m sorry this is happening.

I’m guessing this was an AP Language and Composition class, which deals primarily with nonfiction. Using current events as a means of discussing issues is strongly encouraged, and I would hope we would all recognize that a Presidential election — and this particular one, at that — is a really good, wise choice for examples of rhetoric. Teachers are supposed to make lessons relevant and stimulating, perhaps provocative, even, so while politics may not be required, that’s a ridiculous standard to apply to their use. They’re not banned, either, and as I said, the choice to incorporate them is a smart one above criticism. HOW they are used is a different story. Classroom environments should be protective and allow students to explore ideas safely, but that does not imply an environment free from having ideas challenged. Proselytizing about who to vote for is wrong, but there is nothing wrong at all with using a high-interest, ongoing current event as a source or “text,” if you will, for AP L&C curriculum.

Effective use of rhetoric usually means the audience is unaware of it as a rhetorical device. As the teacher said, it’s used to manipulate or persuade. If we are aware of it, we can resist it. It’s therefore a reasonable thing to say that it’s easier to detect it and identify it when it’s a politician you disagree with, or whom you would resist. While that certainly could hint at bias on the teacher’s part, like where she says Democratic examples are more subtle, it’s also a pretty natural HUMAN thing, not necessarily a deliberate manipulation on her part. If anything, she seems pretty forthcoming about her own opinion, so she’s pretty transparent. She also works in one of the more liberal areas of the state, so using Trump as an example helps the rhetorical devices stand out for the majority of her students.

This is the first time I’ve encountered this blog. Its partisanship is something I respect and defend as the blog creator(s) right, despite my disagreement with the obvious slant. What I find objectionable about the blog is the lack of equity in the actual discourse. Many statements from left-leaning posters have been challenged for word choice, spelling, or rigid standards of proof. I’ve seen no such moderation or challenge of right-leaning statements. You are entitled to your opinion, but there is no semblance of fair discourse. It’s ironic and hypocritical, then, that you would attack this teacher for allegedly doing the same thing.

This is just her fucking opinion. As a student in her class, I saw that she was a wonderful teacher who kept us engaged and actually made us want to learn. Who ever recorded her was a slimy cunt. High school students can think for themselves, they’re almost adults. If you’re that triggered by someone elses opinion you might as well crawl under a fucking rock. This just shows that high school does nothing to prepare you for the real world

And what a fine example of manipulative rhetoric on your part, A.P. Dillon. Are you suggesting that this student also learned expletives from Ms. Harder? Because, you know, teenagers don’t normally use that kind of language (unless coerced by their wicked, liberal-loving English teachers)–right? And speaking of English class, you might want to contact Ms. Harder for some basic remedial grammar lessons considering the fact that you don’t even know the difference between the possessive “your” and the contraction “you’re.”

        YOU’RE welcome.

I am a student in the class that this recording took place.
I was very bothered by what was said in this class, and what continues to be said. This made/makes learning close to impossible in the classroom and the situation could have been handled much differently. I am glad to see this issue being recognized in the public. Though, I am hoping that this one teacher is not greatly affecting the reputation of our school and/or county. One individual’s actions should not change how an entire system is known.

Colin Bunner, a recent graduate from Cedar Ridge, a straight A student, top 3 of his class, and outspoken conservative, responded in the following to a a former Bernie supporter, Landon Johnson. Johnson wrote, “I also don’t like people who shame others people for voting for him. Yea I may not agree with who you are voting for, but I’m not gonna shame you for it. So glad I don’t go there anymore. tbh.” Bunner’s response should silence all of the hyperbole- he is articulate and thoughtful and will very likely vote Trump. Colin wrote, “Did you read the transcript? She did her best to make it a two-sided argument. Having been in her class I know it very unlikely that she ever let the discussion get to a personal level. I can’t stand the “liberal left” as much as the next guy, but people acting like they are being persecuted for their beliefs really get to me. They had every chance to bring up the other side of the issue, but they chose to sit quietly and record so they could play the victim.”

Colin Bunner’s words reflect a truth that you are ignoring. This kid is an outspoken, well educated conservative who is making it clear that what you are writing is taken out of context and it is grounded in PATHOS!

Sorry for calling you out Colin- but the nonsense needs to stop.

Colin should understand, this was one portion of one class.
In fact, Ms. Harder continued to compare Trump to Hitler in multiple classes, while not mentioning nor comparing any of Mrs. Clinton’s speeches in any manner at all.

Ms. Harder’s attempt to make thing “two sided” during this recorded lesson was a feeble at best. I would urge Mr. Brunner not to just read the transcript, but listen to the audio too. Ms. Harder’s contempt for Trump or conservatives is not so easily masked when listening.

I do agree, this nonsense needs to stop.

The audio and transcript support his stance and again, he does not sympathize with the left. Ms. Harder compared Trump to Hillary Clinton in the audio and clearly stated that pathos is a rhetorical strategies that politicians generally use. If asking questions is a sign of contempt, then there is no need trying to reason with you– if you hear contempt in her recording it says more about you than her. Again, the quotes I sent were from a very right wing former student who is defending her because you are using pathos (ie manipulating a situation and conversation to make a point).

Based on what you’ve commented thus far, it seems you have been to all of Ms. Harder’s lectures and know her personally. I also find it quite amusing that you are personally offended by a situation that doesn’t pertain to you. I think the question we all need to ask ourselves here is: “Is it illegal to recognize a reoccurring problem within our society — in this case censorship?” I am not siding with either Clinton or Trump. What is your purpose in deriving this whole article? As you are exercising your right of free speech, why be hypocritical and deny someone else of their rights? Regardless of if she is a teacher or not, your commentary is open to be viewed by many students as well, and will therefore have the same effect. So next time you feel the need to publicly shame someone for a minute long video that displays no bias , nor captures Mrs. Harder’s full teaching methods and capabilities, ask yourself: “Am I making myself a victim of a situation that has no relevance to me?”

More than a few students were upset by this. One asked what would have happened had she asked the to compare Obama or Clinton to Hitler repeatedly. I would have reported that just as I reported this.

Ms. Harder inserted her own political opinions into a lesson. Whether it was one lesson or ten, it shouldn’t happen. This isn’t a case of free speech or opinion, she is a teacher and her actions violated state and local policy.

I must have had the wrong idea about education all these years! I thought (silly me) that we were to teach the curriculum, leading to FREE thoughts and ideas, to allow discussions of those, encouraging those even; BUT not lead students to conclusions with propaganda of our own thoughts when they differ (which in this case she interjected her own political believes several times to sway the students’ beliefs). She occasionally talked about the Left but down played them…You Must click on the link and listen to her “lesson” transcript and video.
This is completely inappropriate like the other N.C. SOCIAL STUDIES teacher who disrespected the flag (stepping of it and I think starting to burn it) and a STUDENT stepped up to stop him. Congrats to both of these students!
Indoctrination and Propaganda are not to be tolerated! These teachers have a right to believe as they choose and they can VOTE their consciences and even join in the political campaign groups of their choice, OUTSIDE of school…that is their method to influence others. A captive audience without choice to leave is NOT the forum for “molding young minds”. Ironically that was Hitler’s (an other dictators) choice to “create followers”.
Democracy encourages debates of differences of opinion but it does not encourage or allow for the methods of these (and possibly other) teachers to push their agenda onto students who at this point in their “education” are to be learning who they are and what they believe (not withstanding their parents’ input), USING factual information of different possibilities.
As a teacher (math), I rarely had call to interject my personal beliefs; however, when ever I was asked about my Vote, I would defer to my Right of Privacy but emphasize my Duty to Vote.

I wonder what the responses would be like if she had suggested examining the use of propaganda during war; “Today children, we will be studying propaganda used during WWII. We’ll be comparing Allied News Reports regarding 7 million Jews allegedly killed in concentration camps and actual Red Cross Reports which show that there never that many in the camps to begin with. Then we’ll look at Jewish census for Europe before and after the war. Then we’ll discuss why such propaganda is still in use today, and who benefits from it.”

In addition to being a commie leftist, she is a bad teacher. She is conflating pathos with scapegoating. Pathos can be used for good and bad moral ends. Look at the speeches of Lincoln and Dr. King. I’d also suggest use of Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson. She is trying to be “hip” but it’s a failure. North Carolina sure has some great teachers! I stood up and told her our generation doesn’t burn the flag, I intend to join the military. I also told her she was being paid to teach English not politics. 8 levels of control that must be obtained before you are able to
        create a socialist commie state.

1)Healthcare – Control healthcare and you control the people.
2)Poverty – Increase the Poverty level as high as possible, poor people are easier to control and will not fight back if you are providing everything for them to live.
3)Debt – Increase the debt to an unsustainable level. Increase taxes, and this will produce more poverty.
4)Gun Control – Remove the ability for people to defend themselves from the Government. That way you are able to create a police state.
5)Welfare – Take control of every aspect of peoples lives (Food, Housing, and Income).
6)Education – Take control of what people read and listen to – take control of what children learn in school.
7)Religion – Remove the belief in God from the Government and schools.
8)Class Warfare – Divide the people into the wealthy and the poor. This will cause more discontent and it will be easier to take (Tax) the wealthy with the support of the poor. Pit black against white, religions, political class, etc.

The EPA scandal is the perfect way to help bankrupt a powerful nation! Another way to force globalization, and a way to fund it!

Housing, feeding, and funding refugees and illegals… another excuse to raise our taxes.

Common core… Obama and Bush W’s propaganda curriculum. Big bucks to be made with the text books and other curriculum.

        Pledge of Allegiance – Gone
        Praying – Gone
        Halloween Costumes – Gone
        Christmas Parties – Gone
        Free Speech – Gone
Every day I read more stories about our kids being taught Islam, Sharia, etc.

Mr. Trump sees this happening, and wants to stop it. He loves his country, and it blatantly shows. He wants our taxes to be spent for the good of America, not support 3rd world people. If you do not want to see this continue, you need to get behind Trump NOW.

Look at this same stuff happening all over the world, all for greedy evil people with deep pockets! I don’t want my children and grandchildren living under sharia law. “The highest art of warfare is not to fight at all but to subvert anything of value in your enemy’s country…be it moral traditions, religion, respect to your authority and leaders, cultural traditions…anything. Put white against black, old against youth, wealth against poor and so on, doesn’t matter, as long as it disturbs society, as long as it cuts the moral fiber of the nation, it’s good. And you just took the country, when everything is subverted, when it is disoriented and confused, when it is demoralized and destabilized, the crisis will come. In war, the ends justify almost any means.”

Obama and Hillary’s agenda all the way! Wake Up People!

        ———

        Obama and Hillary’s strategies…
Capitalism should be collapsed by overloading the government with financial demands that could not be met. The strategy is to collapse the financial system. The tactic is chaos. If a crisis does not exist, create one. The more chaos the better. The solution is always couched in empathetic words like “fair,” “equal,” “humane” and “just.”

Outside of the obvious differences already stated there’s the fact that the Jews were citizens of Germany, Romania, and Poland. In fact, in all three countries they were members of the middle classes, doctors, merchants, lawyers, dentists, bankers, and teachers. The holocaust was as much about confiscating their wealth as it was about eliminating them from this planet. The citizens supported the holocaust because the authorities gave them the homes and businesses of the Jews. There’s your history lesson for today, now go sit in a corner and contemplate your ignorance while asking for the wisdom that you sorely need.

They use articles from Time.com, NewsELA, and other news outlets.

Ever hear of Common Core? For the past 6 years or so, ELA teachers have been told to teach more informational text in the classroom, often doing so by pairing them with literary texts. Using current events is not unheard of in the English classroom. As a former Literacy Coordinator and former English teacher of a neighboring district, I have encouraged others and used speeches by presidents, including the current, to teach many concepts in the classroom. Teaching nonfiction as a genre is a staple in the 9th grade ELA class – so using speeches, news articles, biographies, etc., are commonplace. AP English 3 (Language and Composition) focuses highly on rhetoric and the use of informational texts.
Did she cross a line? Apparently you, some students, and their parents think so. Did she say anything that isn’t on the news, talk shows, campaign ads, etc? Absolutely not. Why shouldn’t our students (who will be voting in a few years) be asked to really think about what they are exposed to by people in authority? Would I have allowed my students to discover that on their own? Maybe. Then again, who knows?
It’s tough to be a teacher in a state that does not value its teachers. It’s tougher when you have to censor yourself from speaking out on your faith, your political beliefs, and anything that can be considered slightly controversial.
It is so disheartening when you think you have this great lesson idea to tie to current events and you become scrutinized by what your motives are. I hope Ms. Harder continues to teach and challenge her students. We definitely can’t afford to lose another good teacher in NC.

Those of us on the other side don’t want indoctrination at all, of any kind, because we feel it is the parent’s job to talk about this to the student, not that of the public school. Ms. Harder has taken upon herself a responsibility that is not hers. The fact that her comments may be the same as those on the news is a ridiculous argument. That’s like saying she should be allowed to be nude in class because they can see it on TV and at the movies anyway. Its an asinine argument. My child can learn about ethos/pathos/logos and rhetorical devices without an attempt by a teacher pushing a personal agenda to brainwash.
