Man Shot Dead by Salt Lake City Police; Claimed to have Bomb

This happened THURSDAY… did anyone hear about it other than those living in the Salt Lake area?? I scan the news all day. I didn’t see this anywhere in my travels until this morning (Sunday).

He obviously failed and the cops thought he was the real deal, as they shot him while he made a move using the backpack. From the article below:

“When Mayhew failed to comply with orders to stop, one officer shot him, McGowan said.”

Man who walked into train station with bomb and threatened to blow himself up shot dead by police

A man was shot dead by police at a Salt Lake City train station on Thursday after threatening to detonate a bomb.

Clutching his red explosives-laced backpack, Anthony Mayhew began making threats, saying he was wired to the potentially lethal device.

‘He was just screaming and yelling and ranting and raving about how unfair life was and he was going to have to go to prison,’ said Mark Browarsky, who saw Mayhew at the Gallivan Centre Trax station.

‘He just seemed very despondent, very dissatisfied with his circumstances.’

Suspicious wires trailed from Mayhew’s bag to his person, a switch clutched in his hand, and he maintained his frightening claims as police arrived on the scene.

They shut off the train station, evacuating local business and positioning snipers atop nearby buildings.

Officers tried to negotiate with the 39-year-old but he was reluctant to co-operate.

After a standoff of about two hours Mayhew stopped talking and sat down on a bench, his arms wrapped around his bag.

‘They issued repeated commands for him to stop,’ Salt Lake City Police Detective Dennis McGowan told FOX 13.

There is video of the events at the bottom of the article. Also here at KMVT 11.

The FOX 13 link confirms he indeed had an explosive device on him:

“In his hand, he had some sort of device that appeared to be a triggering type device with wires leading into the backpack,” McGowan said. “And for a long period of time, he had been walking around in an agitated fashion, threatening to detonate this device that was in his backpack.”

A loud boom was heard, and Mayhew was seen dropping to the ground. Police sent in a bomb robot to retrieve the backpack as he laid on the ground, not moving. Then SWAT team members began CPR as an ambulance arrived. Salt Lake City police said Mayhew was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Overnight, the backpack — and the device inside it — was disrupted by the bomb squad.

From KMVT 11:

Around 9:10 pm 2News received a phone call from a man, identified as Anthony Mayhew, claiming that he was wired with a bomb and had a detonator at the Gallivan Trax Stop located at 299 South Main Street.

Assignment Desk Editor Mehul Asher took the phone call with the suspect. “He just basically said, ‘I am right outside your studio, I have an explosive device strapped to my chest, I have a detonator in my hand,” Asher said. “He was threatening to, I guess, blow himself up.”

Police say they also received a call from the man claiming to have a bomb strapped to his body.

This man clearly wanted an audience. He also apparently knew how to rig an explosive device.

The Salt Lake Tribune is running a story that Mayhew was mentally ill and heard voices from the FBI in his head and kept a written log of what he deemed were terrorist acts. He was suing the government too. He’s been arrested in the past. A lot. Salt Lake Tribune has a photo array of his multiple mug shots here.

Mayhew — who was fatally shot by Salt Lake City police Thursday after threatening to detonate a bomb — was convinced the FBI had planted a brain-computer interface (BCI) in his brain. In a lawsuit filed against the United States of America on Sept. 10, Mayhew attached his log of what he thought were FBI agents speaking in his mind.

Yeah, I’d call that mentally ill.

More from the Salt Lake Tribune on his blogging and obsession with Japanese culture:

In Mayhew’s blog (mrkenshiro.blogspot.com), the 39-year-old West Jordan man described himself as a “criminal contractor/multimedia designer” and “a notorious Japanese American Yakuza.” Records show that on July 30 of this year he also had filed a request with Homeland Security for information on “brain-computer interface” devices he claimed had been placed in two of his family’s homes.

“Homeless at age fifteen, hitman by age eighteen . . . he has been incarcerated over thirty-five times,” Mayhew wrote of himself in the third person. He claimed a violent and criminal past, but insisted “100 percent of his alleged victims have criminal records.”

“I prevent violent crimes from bleeding off into the civil world,” Mayhew asserted. “Let the Criminal Underworld be my domain, for the Criminal Code is my Bible.”

In a nearly five-minute video interview (http://bit.ly/Q8W9ez ) released by an obscure Park City-based video/DVD production company, AFJ Media LLC, a suit-wearing Mayhew repeats much of his blog narrative, claiming he had to leave home at 15, after bringing “a substance” into his house and subsequently being at odds with criminal elements.

Brain-computer interface. O.K. then.

Fortunately for all involved, this guy literally telegraphed his punch.
