Free Speech In Obama’s America Edition

Update: Thank you Professor Reynolds and welcome Instapundit Readers!

Conor Friedersdorf has a column up at the Atlantic which partly inspired this post. In it, he makes the case for why he is refusing to vote for Barack Obama. It’s a well laid out article, but the thrust of it is what spurred me to open this edition of the Friday Focus with it.  That thrust being the media, liberals and Democrats all ignoring the activities they do not like about this President. An excerpt:

How can you vilify Romney as a heartless plutocrat unfit for the presidency, and then enthusiastically recommend a guy who held Bradley Manning in solitary and killed a 16-year-old American kid? If you’re a utilitarian who plans to vote for Obama, better to mournfully acknowledge that you regard him as the lesser of two evils, with all that phrase denotes.

But I don’t see many Obama supporters feeling as reluctant as the circumstances warrant.

The whole liberal conceit that Obama is a good, enlightened man, while his opponent is a malign, hard-hearted cretin, depends on constructing a reality where the lives of non-Americans — along with the lives of some American Muslims and whistleblowers — just aren’t valued. Alternatively, the less savory parts of Obama’s tenure can just be repeatedly disappeared from the narrative of his first term, as so many left-leaning journalists, uncomfortable confronting the depths of the man’s transgressions, have done over and over again.

Please do read the whole thing.

Now, how does this tie in to the title of this edition ‘Free Speech in Obama’s America’? Let’s start with Obama’s recent speech at the U.N., which when you boil it down is summed up in one line:

“The future must not belong to those who slander the prophet of Islam.” – Barack Obama, U.N. Address  September 2012

This statement coming from a U.S. President is beyond incredible.  It went largely ignored by the media. When it was mentioned, those mentioning it were slammed for ‘taking it out of context’. I’m sorry, but how exactly does one take the President of the United States siding with the opinion of radical Islamists out of context? The President, in one Carteresque sentence, threw free speech and the American people under the bus. Obama made sure to emphasize in his speech that the U.S. Government had little to do with a YouTube trailer being blamed for Muslim rioting and that it was the citizenry’s fault they made it. Consider that as you continue reading this post. Let’s take a look at what went on over this past weekend in NYC. From YouTube:

New York Imam Shahbaz Chisti Sahib from the Coney Island Brooklyn Mosque and Marshall of Muslim Day Parade 2012 leads crowd in Nazi Style salute Sunday Sept. 23rd 2012 New York, NY

Think that was rather incredible? Check out what Pamela Geller has up on her site:

Today in New York City was the Muslim Day Parade, where Muslims protested against blasphemy and for the imposition of the sharia in America.

The Muslim Consultative Network had a table for people to draw a subway sign and held up a sign: “Don’t Hate, Educate” in response to our anti-jihad subway campaing. Shouldn’t these moderate Muslims be standing with me in opposing jihadi attacks? Aren’t these the peaceful Muslims who should be vocally denouncing the jihadists who give Islam a bad name? Most Muslims skipped the parade and showed up for the mass prayer in the street — 23rd street Wudu station. Prayers on the street and a ho hum parade, screaming takbir for blocks.

A few images as an example:

A redesigned US flag – one star for one Nation under Islam, as part of the Niqab.. while carrying the black banner of Islam used by Al Qaeda.

The same message as Obama’s U.N. Speech in a sign on the streets of NYC.

There is a lot more — go see them all. One has to wonder where the media was on this one. They cover Occupy, why not their ideological pals here? Creeping Sharia has more. So does Urban Infidel.

A few days later, we have this video (below) via NewsBusters: CNN and MSNBC Pundit Arrested for Vandalizing Anti-Muslim Ad In N.Y. Subway System

From the video:

“Mona, do you think you have the right to do this?” said Pamela Hall.

“I do actually,” Eltahawy stated, “I think this is freedom of expression, just as this is freedom of expression.”

Freedom of expression to Eltahawy is defiling and replacing free speech of another with her own. We’ve seen this before, on our college campuses. Eltahawy isn’t exercising free speech, she’s exercising Islamic censorship.  The assault on free speech has come out of the shadows and is spray painting posters in broad daylight. It is not just an assault on free speech, it is the promotion of antisemitism as well. Flashback to not so long ago:

Antisemitism isn’t just on the rise in pockets here and there, it’s been clearly seen in the Democrat party this year:

Let us not forget the DNC vote on adding Jerusalem and God back into the platform either; the no’s clearly had it:

Consider this video from a Jewish woman who voted for Obama in 2008 I found via Right Change:

A new, 18-minute mini-documentary follows the journey of Irina, a 23-year-old liberal, Jewish New Yorker who voted for Obama in 2008. Yet as her connection to Israel has grown, and she has learned more about the President’s policies across the Middle East and towards Israel in particular, Irina has come to realize that “when the chips are down,” the President may not “have Israel’s back” as he says.

Getting back to the Free speech issue, DaTechGuy has an article up that hits several free speech nails on the head with one hammer, emphasis mine:

If you are anything resembling a regular reader you know I’m Catholic, VERY Catholic, my last Subscription only commentary was done in front of my church after mass. I will happily debate and defend Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular against any person of any religion or no religion.

I’m also an American, an American who believes in free speech so my first instinct when I see this story is outrage:

“The case against Ahmed Mohammed Abdullah is a rare example of Egypt’s blasphemy laws – often condemned by rights groups as restrictive of freedom – used against someone who allegedly insulted a religion other than Islam.
Abdullah, also known as Abu Islam, was filmed during a protest outside the embassy two weeks ago as he stood before the crowd and tore an English version of the Bible. “Next time I will urinate on it,” he says in another video in an apparent reference to the holy book. Both videos were posted online.”

I don’t like people insulting my religion and in one sense this is progress for Egypt that the “blasphemy laws” are being enforced against those who insult Christianity, but that doesn’t matter.

You can not have a free society without free speech, you just can’t. For an American free speech is the backbone of our culture, the first freedom mentioned in the first Amendment in our constitution. The Statue of Liberty refers to people “yearning to breathe free”.

*snip* Go read it all.

I’m having a hard time believing this nation is going to sit there and watch our Constitution be shredded – yet here we are. I’ve been beating the drum that this election is about Two Paths and it’s never been more true when you see what has unfolded since that terrible night in Benghazi.

This administration and its ‘smart diplomacy’ have succeeded in making us more hated than when Bush was President. Seriously, think about that a moment. What’s more, I think Obama has done this purposefully with regard to building a coalition that will attack Israel. Consider all Obama has done to foster some nations while ignoring others, his drone attacks driving Al Qaeda to seek revenge, his billions in aid to Islamists who want us dead and this President’s dangerous pandering by essentially siding with said Islamists on free speech as I noted above.

Obama’s own DOJ would not rule out blasphemy laws – the same ones being demanded by radical Islamists worldwide. (Related: Video: DoJ Civil Rights Division chief can’t commit to protecting free speech )

Just look at what Obama’s pal Morsi is saying as we send MORE aid to Egypt: Morsi urges end of Israeli occupation, limits on free speech

Unconvinced? Still think Obama’s a ‘nice guy’ with America’s best interests at heart? Think the Muslim Brotherhood is nothing to worry about? Think the Muslim Brotherhood is just a Conservative boogey man who hasn’t infiltrated our government? Well, then this article probably has made your head explode, but here’s one more piece I’m going to thrust at you anyway from and it is from Michelle Malkin:

Who Is White House visitor Hisham Altalib?

So, who is Hisham Yahya Altalib? What is his agenda?

And why exactly did the Obama administration conduct domestic “faith-based” outreach with this Muslim Brotherhood figure in Virginia, who just happens to be 1) tied to bloody jihad and 2) a major contributor to the left-wing Center for Constitutional Rights, the group of jihadi-sympathizing lawyers who helped spring suspected Benghazi terror plotter Abu Sufian bin Qumu from Gitmo?

Altalib is an Iraqi-born Muslim identified by the FBI as a Muslim Brotherhood operative before he moved to America in the 1970s to earn an advanced electrical engineering degree from Purdue University in Indiana. By his own account, Altalib “soon became active in Islamic work in North America, which continues to this day.”

That snippet is barely the tip of the iceberg – it is a must read.  Perhaps infiltration is the wrong term. From the looks of all of this, Obama and his administration are working in concert with the Muslim Brotherhood.  Why else would an administration decide to publish a list of GITMO detainees about to be released (one of which is Bin Laden’s bodyguard) if not to further pander to Obama’s base and simultaneously use as a signal to the rioting nations in the Middle East after our embassies in the region were all attacked? I mean, Hell, why not just label the list “reinforcements” and be done with it? I have PDF copies of the profiles of each of these 55 detainees via a the very hard and diligent work of a colleague of mine. If you want them, email me:

I’m ready for the slew of ‘Islamophobia’ and ‘racist’ comments. Bring it on. I’m exercising  my freedom of speech — while I still have it. So, four more years? Not a chance in Hell.

In summary, welcome to free speech in Obama’s America.

Conor Friedersdorf shows that we are living in too many “alternative realities”; his is one where “assassinate, don’t interrogate” is properly bad, but also one in which Bradley Manning is a whistle-blower instead of a traitor who should rather obviously be allowed to talk to as few people as possible (or perhaps one in which the government isn’t allowed to keep anything secret).

As far as your main point, while Obama’s posture towards free speech is unspeakably vile and far too many people support it, directly or because he’s their man, I’m not too worried yet, much of the rest of our society rejects this and hopefully we’ll be turning him out of office soon enough.

If not for political correctness and the collusion of the MSM, we would have known all of this about Obama in time not to elect him in the first place. As it is, I thought Jeremiah Wright and William Ayres were reason enough not to vote for him.
