Iowa Caucus 2012

IOWA CAUCUS 2012

Well, it was a barn burner. Romney squeaked it out by 8 votes over Santorum. Romney beat Santorum by 1 in terms of Delegates, placing them in a percentage tie at 25%. Paul was in third and behind Santorum by 3,788 votes. I’m sure Paul will do his best hanging Chad imitation for the next few months.

The voters who identified themselves at Liberal really went for Romney (35%) and  Paul (40%).  Not surprisingly, the 17-24 age group (50%) and 25-29 (45%) went for Paul. This is not so worrisome to me, but it will be to Obama who took the Lion’s share of the youth vote in 2008. Dems are already losing party numbers and the youth numbers are particularly dismal. Older voters (65 and up) went for Romney then Santorum. Paul finished 5 out of the 6 with that age range. Go figure.  Santorum edged Romney in the 54-65 group though by one percentage point. See the results for yourself here.

LL 1885’s Take:

Now is the time for the herd to thin. Bachmann, Perry and Huntsman, that means you.

Gingrich should hang in there through South Carolina. I don’t think he’s done quite yet. Personally, I would love to see him become someone’s Chief of Staff. Think about that a while.

Bachmann has said she won’t quit despite the results in Iowa — I hope she shows some sense and rescinds that statement. I like her, but she’s clearly done.

Hunstman is only in there to make things messy and arch his eyebrow non-stop. He can take his catty ways and offensive attempts at jokes and hit the road. He was never in it for me and never will be. Ever.

Perry gave it a nice try in Iowa. His ads were good and his public appearances showed renewed enthusiasm and confidence on his part. Too late. His return to Texas to assess his campaign will result in his ending it and throwing his support behind another candidate. I think he will take his time in naming his choice of nominee. I don’t see it being Romney.
