Don’t Touch My Junk: Nanny State Edition

A link came from a reader of mine this  morning that prompted me to write a quick post here. The story is about a Chicago school deciding what can and can’t be in lunches kids bring from home. Yes, you read that right. In line with Michelle Obama’s “HEALTHFUL” eating campaign, known to the public as ‘Let’s Move’ but I like to call it ‘Let’s Overreach’, this school is outlawing homemade lunches.

Principal Elsa Carmona is taking it one step further:

“Principal Elsa Carmona said her intention is to protect students from their own unhealthful food choices. Nutrition wise, it is better for the children to eat at the school,” Carmona said. “It’s about the nutrition and the excellent quality food that they are able to serve (in the lunchroom). It’s milk versus a Coke. But with allergies and any medical issue, of course, we would make an exception.”

Excuse me? It is not the right nor purview of a school to dictate what my child eats in the first place, much less dictate they can’t bring a lunch that I pack for my child. You know what other exception you’re going to make Elsa? The exception of me sitting at lunch with my kid with our lunchboxes from home if I lived there. That and my lawyer suing you personally as well as the school district for interfering with my child’s well being. You are there to teach children the basics and provide an education not police their lunchboxes or brown bags.

What I simply do not believe is that parents are sitting there allowing this to go on. Are you all asleep in Chicago? Your parental rights are being usurped by the school and you’re silent on this?

“At Claremont Academy Elementary School on the South Side, officials allow packed lunches but confiscate any snacks loaded with sugar or salt. (They often are returned after school.) Principal Rebecca Stinson said that though students may not like it, she has yet to hear a parent complain.”

I think my head is going to explode on this one. It suffices to say, if an attempt like this went on in my own child’s school you would all be seeing me on the 6 pm evening news as the lead story. The amount of noise, fury and legal woes I would unleash would be the stuff of legend. Wake up parents! At what point are you going to stand up and protect your parental responsibility? Your children are yours to protect, love, nurture and FEED.
